Breaking Boundaries


The theme for this year's conference is, ‘Breaking Boundaries', a nod to community music's diverse and inclusive nature. Community music as a growing international field crosses a variety of diverse fields and learning scenarios, welcoming all ages and levels of musical understanding to engage in a shared musical experience. 

Join us May 24-25, 2018 for Breaking Boundaries: Community Music Research Symposium hosted by the Program in Music and Music Education at Teachers College, Columbia University, in collaboration with the International Centre for Community Music at York St. John.

A collaboration between Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City and York St. John University in York, U.K. poetically pairs Old York and New York to internationally connect and engage music facilitators. 

Call for Contributions

Submissions are particularly welcomed from student and emerging scholar papers that resonate with the following categories:

  • Research on community music partnerships and collaborations
  • Methodological, theoretical, and conceptual frameworks in community music research
