Welcome to the Program

  • About the Program

    The degree programs in Education Policy examine both formal and informal institutions of schooling and the political, legal, bureaucratic, organizational, economic, and social factors that affect both schools and the broader educational enterprise. Students address critical problems affecting education, develop a broad and inclusive view of the kinds of issues facing policymakers, and are encouraged to study and reflect on the processes by which research becomes linked to policy and practice. We assume that issues related to the roles that families, communities, and civil society play in promoting education outside of school will escalate in importance in the future. Graduates of the programs currently work in national school reform organizations and non-profit groups focused on children and youth; local, state and federal education agencies; private research institutes and advocacy groups; and in colleges and universities as faculty and administrators.     Kathleen (Ed.D.): “I chose TC as the place to pursue my doctorate in education policy because of the research the program's faculty were doing at the time (and still are) on policy matters that I am passionate about, particularly privatization, charter schools and the sociology of organizations. Additionally, when I was investigating doctoral programs, TC faculty who I contacted and subsequently met with welcomed me warmly and answered my questions thoroughly (which was not my experience at every school I visited). That personal touch, plus the opportunity to learn from these researchers and to do so in the most exciting city in the U.S., pushed TC to the top of my list.”  

    (M.A.): “I came because of the many good things I heard about TC almost 10,000 miles away in Singapore. Brilliant faculty and wonderful peers in EPOL contribute to a dynamic learning environment which has made the commute worth it!”
