Action Alert #4
Letter to the US Postal Service

January 22, 2004, will be the 100th anniversary of George Balanchine’s
birth. NYCB volunteers have taken on the project of getting a commemorative stamp issued by the US Postal Service.

Howard Solomon, the chairman of New York City Ballet’s Board of Directors, has written to the Postal Service suggesting that it issue a stamp. The next step is up to us!! We need to show the Postal Service that there is public support for a stamp. You can help by signing and mailing the following letter to the US Postal Service:

U.S. Postal Service
475 L’Enfant Plaza, S.W., Room 4474EB
Washington, DC 20260-6756

To the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee:

I write in support of the movement to issue a stamp in honor of Mr. George Balanchine's enormous contributions to ballet and dance in general in the United States.

The organizations he founded, the School of American Ballet and New York City Ballet, great dancers that he trained, the ballets that changed dance history or celebrate American culture, as well as his work in musical theater and films are all examples of his profound influence on American art in the 20th century and would be appropriately recognized with a commemorative stamp.

Thank you for your consideration of this request that America honor the 100th anniversary of this great artist's birth. Let's make January 22, 2004 a great day for everyone who loves dance in America.

Sincerely,
