A 5-hour documentary released on CCTV-9 in 2018, named "Nankai - a School’s Odyssey," caused a sensation in China. It soon became one of the most talked-about historic films among official reports and online medias. The documentary retraces a memorable history of how prominent Chinese educational pioneers Chang Poling launched the first private college in China after studying in Teachers College, Columbia University, with a belief in John Dewey’s philosophy and ideals of regenerating China through education. Nankai, which was one of the most-renowned private colleges, has made a miracle in Chinese education history: it is the alma mater of two Chinese premiers (Zhou Enlai and Wen Jiaobao), tens of academicians, numerous scientists, educators, writers and artists.
On February 26th, 2019, Mr. Guang Zu, the producer and director, who is one of the leading figures in the documentary domain in China, visited Teachers College and shared the tale of Nankai and its far-reaching impact with TC students, faculty and staff. The first section of this event was the world premiere of the film's English version and the audience viewed the first episode - "Seeking the Road Forward"; following the preimere was a panel discussion with TC faculty, Nankai almuni and Mr. Guang Zu, who introduced the background and process of the filming. One of the interviewees in the episode, Prof. Henry Levin, who was interviewed in the first episode of the film, also attended the discussion and shared his experience of collaborating with Chinese educators over the past four decades.
