Introduction
We are excited to invite you to a special talk by Dr. Gao Yunxiang on the life and career of Soo Yong, a groundbreaking Chinese actress in 1930s Hollywood and a 1925 graduate of Teachers College. Soo Yong was one of the few Chinese women of her time who attended an American university. Her remarkable career not only broke barriers in Hollywood, but she also played a pivotal role in cultural diplomacy, accompanying Mei Lanfang during his U.S. tour as a cultural interpreter. This talk will also highlight the broader legacy of Teachers College alumnae, including Minnie Vautrin, who protected thousands during the Nanjing Massacre, and Yang Yingyu, one of China’s first female university presidents, showcasing how these women shaped history and global cultural exchange.
