Event Description
In a world increasingly marked by uncertainty and anxiety, nature offers a powerful refuge, guiding us toward peace, strength, hope, and spiritual clarity. On Sunday April 27 at 2:00–4:00 pm, the Center on Chinese Education at Teachers College, Columbia University, will host a special session entitled "The Power of Art Lecture Series: Nature, Art and Spiritual Cultivation" led by renowned Chinese landscape painter, calligrapher, researcher and National First-Class Artist, Mr. Hanyu Yu.
Rooted in over two decades of immersion in the sacred landscapes of the Tibet Plateau, Mr. Yu's artistic journey reveals a deep reverence for nature and a profound engagement with Eastern philosophies, especially Taoism. Through ink and brush, he explores themes from the I Ching, the aesthetics of tranquility, and the Daoist ideal of harmony between self and the natural world. For Mr. Yu, painting is not only a creative act but also a form of self-cultivation — each brushstroke reflecting an inner dialogue and spiritual resonance.
This event spotlights the aesthetic and philosophical richness of Chinese landscape ink wash painting, inviting participants into a meditative world where brushstrokes resonate with inner peace. Followed by Mr. Yu's lecture, this event also features an interactive ink wash painting workshop, offering attendees the rare opportunity to engage hands-on with this timeless art form and discover its power as a bridge between nature and the spirit.
*Refreshments will be provided during the event.
