“Health Disparities, Trauma, Disruptive and Criminal Behaviors, and the Adolescent Brain”
This one day interdisciplinary conference examines: neurobiological development and developmental changes in adolescent cognitive competence and behavioral self-control; the impact of bio-psychosocial trauma upon developing executive functions; appropriate treatment and criminal justice system responses to adolescent disruptive and criminal behaviors; and policy implications for juvenile justice system reform.
Morning Keynote Address: Dr. Laurence Steinberg
Presentation Title — Age of Opportunity: Lessons From the New Science of Adolescence
Laurence Steinberg, Ph.D., is the Distinguished University Professor and Laura H. Carnell Professor of Psychology at Temple University. His latest book, Age of Opportunity: Lessons from the New Science of Adolescence (2014), focuses on contemporary adolescence including brain development, risk-taking, and decision-making. His expertise includes high school reform, and juvenile justice. His participation in the APA's amicus brief supported the Supreme Court's decision to abolish the juvenile death penalty.
Afternoon Keynote Address: Dr. Kirkland Vaughans
Presentation Title — Boys and Adolescent Males of color: Poverty, the Police and Trauma
Kirkland C. Vaughans, Ph.D. is on the faculty of the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies at Adelphi University, and the Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Postgraduate Program at Adelphi University. He is founding editor of the Journal of Infant, Child, and Adolescent Psychotherapy, and first-editor of the two-volume book, The Psychology of Black Boys and Adolescents (2014). His expertise includes the "school-to-prison pipeline" and treatment implications, as well as the intergenerational transmission of trauma among African Americans.
