This is a systematic review of the literature pertaining to Exercise and Physical Therapy practices in the treatment of those with amyotrophic lateral sclerosi (ALS), which is a fatal, rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disease involving both upper and lower motor neurons. This review explores treatments or interventions by stage of ALS (early, middle, late), and by classification by the WHO International Classification of Functioning (Body Structure/Function, Activity Limitation, Participation Restriction). Treatments/Interventions can range from aerobic exercise, resistance training, to yoga, or stretching. The primary aims of this study are to better synthesize the mass amount of information on treatment, clarify conflicts within the literature, and categorize approaches as an attempt for improved knowledge translation.
