Climate Week NYC is an annual summit that has taken place every year in New York City since 2009. The event, which is hosted alongside the UN General Assembly, brings together governments, civil society, businesses, and the wider global audience to discuss leading climate solutions. The event is run by an international non-profit the Climate Group in conjunction with the United Nations, and in partnership with the COP26 (the 26th UN Climate Change Conference) and the City of New York. The Climate Group has selected the Columbia Climate School as its university partner for this year’s Climate Week NYC.
The Center for Sustainable Futures, an affiliate of the Columbia Climate School, hosted three webinars as part of Climate Week NYC 2021. These events feature the work we do at the Center, partnering with multiple stakeholder to promote climate change education:
Panel 1: Youth and Climate Justice Activism in NYC
Youth activists are increasingly taking action and speaking out about their future being under serious threat from the effects of climate change. The panel featured two local youth activists, local government leaders, and scholars. Speakers examined questions of what motivates youth to mobilize, and what adults can do to support young people at this time.
Panel 2: State of Climate Education at NYC Dept of Education
Education is an essential factor in the global fight against climate change. The panel featured researchers, local government leaders, and educators as they discuss their work on improving climate change education in New York City public schools.
Panel 3: Climate Education for All
Education is a critical agent in addressing and mitigating climate change. Research by the Center for Sustainable Futures shows that four-in-five educators say an online portal for climate curricular resources would help them to teach about climate change. The panel featured a newly launched website, SubjectToClimate, that connects educators with hundreds of teaching resources from over 20 different content providers.
