The newly established M.A. in Sustainability & Education at Teachers College, Columbia University invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor of Teaching. This is a non-tenure track, nine-month, renewable appointment beginning September 2026. The successful candidate will teach courses in environmental sustainability and education, advise M.A. students, engage in program-related work, and contribute to the strategic development and operations of the Sustainability & Education program. We seek a scholar whose research and teaching address the intersection of environmental sustainability and education (broadly defined), with a demonstrated commitment to inclusive, practice-oriented pedagogy across diverse educational sites (K–12, higher education, nonprofits, and community organizations).

About the Program: The M.A. in Sustainability & Education—the first Ivy League graduate program of its kind—prepares educators, policy professionals, and organizational leaders to advance ecological integrity, social justice, and economic vitality through transformative education. The program is structured as follows:
• Summer 1: In-person immersive session at Teachers College (New York)
• Fall & Spring: Remote coursework and guided independent study
• Summer 2: Final in-person intensive session at Teachers College (New York)
Each phase is supported by preparatory work, reflective integration, and mentorship.
Qualifications
Minimum:
• Earned doctorate in education and/or a related social science discipline (e.g., political science, sociology, anthropology).
• 2–3 years of higher-education teaching experience.
• Demonstrated engagement with international frameworks and discourses in education and sustainability.
• Demonstrated strength in innovative research methods relevant to sustainability and education (e.g., community-based or design-based research, mixed methods, critical policy analysis, social network analysis).
• Ability to teach core courses in environmental sustainability education (e.g., Climate Change, Society, and Education) and professional/practice courses in sustainability and education (e.g., Professional Seminar, Strategic Planning, Project Management).
Preferred:
• Ph.D. or terminal degree in sustainability/environmental education, education policy, environmental studies, or a closely related field.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse student populations and to integrate inclusive practices into teaching and mentorship.
