Open Letter to Teachers College Leadership

Sustainability Task Force

March 2023

The students of the Sustainability Task Force (STF) want to thank President Bailey and administration for their continued support around sustainability. We are excited for the commitments detailed in the President's November email to the college, including the creation of a long-term sustainability roadmap, integration of sustainability throughout coursework and research, and supervision of TC's financial investments to ensure they align with environmental values.

Considering the urgency of this work and the need to include the entire TC community within these sustainable changes, we want to urge the creation of a cross constituency committee for climate action and sustainability on TC campus. Similar to the Committee for Community and Diversity (CCD), we envision a space where students, faculty, and staff can come together to advise the ways we can promote sustainable action with TC’s financial investments, academics and research, and campus infrastructure. This type of committee would be aligned with SOCOTEC’s report for developing a new TC sustainability approach. Aligned with their Regular Reporting, Transparency, and Celebration pillar, they identified “RTC.3: Establish a Sustainability & Wellness “Champion” (individual or group) for Teachers College empowered and representing all stakeholders” as a short term goal. We see this group as an essential first step to center transparency and inclusivity in all sustainability initiatives at TC.

STF is excited to support the creation of a committee for climate action and sustainability in any way possible. We look forward to continuing working together for a more sustainable, climate-conscious, and equitable TC.
