Marion Bethel (MA '76) recently completed a documentary film entitled Womanish Ways: Freedom, Human Rights & Democracy, The Women's Suffrage Movement in the Bahamas -- 1948-1962. The movie celebrates the vision, spirit, creativity and work of women in The Bahamas who struggled through the eras (pre-emancipation, post-emancipation, pre-independence and post-independence) for the freedom and enfranchisement of all Bahamians.

Leonard J. Garigliano (EdD '72) will be receiving the Adelphi University’s Alumni Achievement Award. Garigliano taught science, specifically biology, at the middle school level for 10 years. After his time at TC he worked at Salisbury State College for 24 years. For more information on Garigliano, click here.

Kevin Kinser (EdD '00), an associate professor at University at Albany-State University of New York's School of Education, was named NAFSA’s Senior Fellow in Internationalization. Kinser’s expertise is in for-profit higher education, international higher education policy, and higher education quality assurance. For more information on Kinser and his new position, click here.

Dolly Lambdin (MA ’74) is now the President-Elect of American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Lambdin received her EdD from University of Massachuttes before moving on to teach at the University of Texas at Austin for 35 years. With June officially upon us, we are now only three months away from closing out the books for 2013. Even though the College's 125th Anniversary is a year-long celebration, August 31 marks the end of the TC Fund's fiscal year. That means, for your gift to count as a 2013 contribution, it needs to be received on our records by August 31.

Francine Fabricant (ME '01) recently co-wrote a book entitled "Creating Career Success: A Flexible Plan for the World of Work". Fabricant is a career counselor and career development instructor in the New York area and currently serves as an affiliate member of TC's Alumni Council.

Jose Hermann Cuadros (EdD '03) recently wrote a book entitled "Parental Perceptions of Mental Retardation as Disability". Cuadros' book elaborates on his doctoral thesis in special education and presents parental and specialist perspectives about mental retardation as disability.

June 5 - Provost Series
Provost Tom James will be hosting the second installment in the 2012-2013 Provost's Series. The spring event will feature W. Warner Burke, the Edward Lee Thorndike Professor of Psychology & Education and Chair of the Department of Organization and Leadership at TC. Warner's talk is entitled "Learning Agility: The X-Factor for Effective Leadership?" The Provost Series provides a wonderful opportunity for TC Fund donors to engage in dialogue about important trends and ideas in education, health and psychology. The event is also a way to showcase the path-breaking work of our faculty and students.

June 18-20 - Jakarta, Indonesia: "Intersections of Power, Politics, and Conflict in East Asia"
The three-day conference will parse the shifting dynamics of regional power and highlight the remarkable scholarship that is keeping apace of the region's dynamism. The conference will draw on the Columbia faculty's regional expertise in East Asia and will provide a comparative analysis of the varying political and security concerns in Northeast and Southeast Asia. The Jakarta event is the first major symposium held by Columbia University in Southeast Asia and reflects the Weatherhead East Asian Institute's commitment to enhancing the understanding of an area that sits on the fault lines of global change.

Join national leaders in education law to discuss critical issues of law, policy, and practice. We will cover a range of topics including charter schools, standardized testing, serving English language learners and students with disabilities, and free-speech rights of students and teachers. July (& August) 2013 - Math Camp - Integrating the Common Core Shifts into Mathematics Instruction
The goal of MathCamp is to help teachers apply the shifts specified by the Common Core Mathematics Standards into their classroom instruction. We will deepen not only your content knowledge but also the critical pedagogical content knowledge which leads to richer explanations and more complete representations, all of which strengthen the foundations of mathematical meaning.

July 9 - August 31 - The Columbia Environmental Education at a Distance (CEED) program
The CEED online program is readily accessible to teachers across the country, offering distinguished continuing education to those outside of Columbia's immediate vicinity. Based on the Integrated Ecology Curriculum program-developed and tested over a period of more than five years by Columbia faculty--CEED combines the flexibility of online education with the live support of expert mentors. Participating middle school teachers learn to create curriculum and practice methods that prepare their students to apply real-world concepts, knowledge and skills. CEED's project-based methods and focus on field experience also promote student academic engagement, which extensive research shows is consistently highly correlated with academic outcomes and graduation rates.
