Here are some frequently asked questions about the Painting & Drawing Art Studio. If you have any additional questions that are not on this list, please email 2dstudio@tc.columbia.edu.
The Painting & Drawing Art Studio is located at 445 Macy Hall (directly across from the Macy Hall fourth-floor elevator).
Only students enrolled in classes that meet in Macy 445 can access the studio during open studio hours, unless they are participating in an official Art and Art Education Program workshop in Macy 445 or granted special permission from an instructor and/or the studio fellow.
Students enrolled in courses that meet in Macy 445 can access the studio during open studio hours. After the add/drop period, it is often the case that enrolled students may also access the studio using an access code at other times of the day. This additional studio access (outside of monitored open studio hours) is offered on a semester-to-semester basis, depending on the availability of AAE Program staff, faculty, and resources.
Yes! The Art and Art Education Program hosts workshops and other special events in Macy 445 for the TC Community to participate in. Please check out the Art & Art Education bulletin (outside Macy 445) studio for more information on these workshops and special events (such as guest artist demonstrations and NAEA workshops).
Yes! Visitors are always welcome. Please email the studio fellow at 2dstudio@tc.columbia.edu to schedule a tour during open studio hours.
Yes! Our studio courses are designed for students who are new to art and also for those with experience with painting and drawing. You can learn more about our courses in Macy 445 by visiting TC’s online course schedule through the steps below:
- Select the current semester (ex. Fall 2023) under the Please select a term drop-down;
- Then select the A&HA code under the Any subject drop-down;
- And lastly, click the Search green button below.

The studio provides students who are enrolled in a drawing course access to paper, drawing materials, sketchbooks, and other media. Students may wish to purchase supplementary materials for specific projects.
Introductory painting kits are available for purchase at Blick Harlem at a discounted rate. Painting media, paper, and supplementary supplies are available in the studio as well to students enrolled in Intro to Painting.
Intermediate students are expected to bring their own materials. Supplementary media and materials are available in the studio for use.
Yes! If you are taking a drawing or painting class in the fall semester, you will have an opportunity to showcase your work at Macy Art Gallery. In the fall and spring semesters, you will also have the opportunity to show your work at a final show in the studio during the last week of classes.
Yes! We welcome opportunities to collaborate and engage with TC offices, departments, and programs, as well as the community. Please contact the studio fellow at 2dstudio@tc.columbia.edu to discuss this.
