Dr. Contento and Alvarez presented along with colleagues from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the Mexican National Institute of Public Health in a symposium entitled: "Why should governments focus on the linkages between nutrition education and food policies?" The pair presented on data from Alvarez’s doctoral dissertation, Mexican’s awareness of the sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) tax and consumption of taxed SSBS.

The IUNS members include dozens of national nutrition associations and international organizations, and the organization’s congresses are some of the worlds’ largest on nutrition.
