The Tisch Food Center surveyed research regarding the relationship between nutrition and mental health in children and adolescents. Access the brief for our key findings, fast facts about youth mental health, and policy implications.
Research shows a clear connection between diet and mental health in children and adolescents, where unhealthy diets are linked to higher rates of depression and poorer mental health, potentially through inflammation and oxidative stress that impact brain development and emotional regulation. In contrast, healthy diets rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean protein are associated with better self-esteem, fewer emotional problems, and reduced depression symptoms. Schools can play a critical role by integrating food and nutrition education and healthy school meals into comprehensive wellness policies to support students' mental health.
