Fourteen students from the Program in Mathematics and other TC Programs traveled through Chile and Argentina during the first two weeks of January 2002 with Bruce Vogeli, the Clifford Brewster Upton Professor of Mathematics. The Chile/Argentina Study Tour was the fifth sponsored by the Program in Mathematics as part of its commitment to cultural diversity. Previous tours visited Nepal, Russia, East Africa, and the Peoples Republic of China.

Tour participants visited schools and universities, met with teachers, adminstrators and ministry officials and still had time to enjoy the culture and beauty of each country. Students receive graduate credit for tour participation. Alumni and guests can participate as well.

The Chile/Argentina Tour Group met with TC Alumni at a reception in Santiago, Chile, attended by prominent educators including former ministers of education, university rectors and deans. The group visited Santiago, Concepcion, and Puerto Varas in Chile and Bariloche, Mendoza, and Buenos Aires in Argentina where they met with TC alumni and Fulbright fellows.

Future Study Tours are planned to Guatemala/Costa Rica (March 2002); Nepal/Bhutan/Tibet (May 2002); Russia (November 2002) and Tahiti/Figi (January 2003). For more information, please contact the Department of Mathematics at x3381.
