She said concerns that school programs focusing on the workplace discourage students from graduating or pursuing post-secondary study generally don't bear out. Instead, students in these programs tend to do at least as well and sometimes better than those who are not.

Mechur Karp also cautioned that successful career education programs should include internship opportunities that last beyond a few days.
