TC Names Nancy Streim to coordinate activities in local schools

Nancy Streim, an expert on university-public school partnerships, will be joining Teachers College in the newly created position of Associate Vice President at TC and Special Advisor to the Columbia University Provost. Streim has played a key role in recent collaborations between the University of Pennsylvania and public schools in Philadelphia.

Streim has played a key role in recent collaborations between the University of Pennsylvania and public schools in Philadelphia. She will start her new job on August 1st.

Streim will coordinate TC's activities in the New York City public schools and will be charged with developing new and more intensive partnerships for the College with the District, local communities and local schools. Among her other duties, she also will develop and coordinate outreach involving the public school system; coordinate TC's relationship with Columbia University involving the public schools; and seek external funding for school partnership opportunities.

Streim currently serves as Associate Dean for Educational Practice at the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education (Penn GSE), where she worked closely for many years with TC President Susan Fuhrman when the latter was Penn GSE Dean.

"Speaking from firsthand experience, I can say that Nancy's work at Penn has fundamentally changed the relationship of both the School of Education there and the University as a whole with the Philadelphia public schools," Fuhrman said in announcing the new hire.

"I couldn't be more excited to bring my experience and commitment to TC's efforts to engage more deeply with the New York City schools," Streim said. "With its tremendous array of intellectual resources, TC is well positioned to be a key player in new and expanded collaborations with school and community leaders to improve educational outcomes for children.  It is an honor to contribute to advancing educational equity and opportunity through innovative partnerships between the nation's largest urban school system and the country's top ranked school of education."

Over the past several years, Streim has played a key role in the development of the nationally-recognized Penn Alexander School, a university-assisted demonstration public K-8 school in Philadelphia that grew out of a unique partnership among the University of Pennsylvania, the local school district and the teachers' union. She also has led development of a new Penn-assisted public high school focusing on international studies, in partnership with the Asia Society, which is projected to open in 2008. In addition, she currently directs the Penn Partnership Schools network, an initiative to improve academic outcomes at two elementary schools that the University co-manages with the Philadelphia School District.

In work for the Gates Foundation, Streim currently is documenting principles underlying successful university-partnership schools across the U.S.  She also teaches "Educational and Social Entrepreneurship," a popular graduate course at Penn GSE .

From 1994-2005, Streim served as Principal Investigator of the Penn Merck Collaborative for the Enhancement of Science Education, a professional development program for over 500 Philadelphia teachers that was supported by the National Science Foundation and the Merck Institute for Science Education. Her work in science education continues as Principal Investigator of SPARK!, an NSF funded math and science enrichment program for Philadelphia students in grades 4-8. 

Streim holds a BA from Bryn Mawr College, an MSEd from the State University of New York, and a PhD from University of Wisconsin-Madison.
