Levees: A Classroom Narrative

Dan Nichols, a teacher at the Heritage School in New York City, organized a media project to challenge his students to be engaged citizens.
A segment on AfterED is featuring a local teachers use of the Teaching The Levees: A Curriculum for Democratic Dialogue and Civic Engagement, a curriculum developed by Teachers College for When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts, an HBO documentary about Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath directed by Spike Lee.

Dan Nichols, a teacher at the Heritage School in New York City, has organized an inquiry based project to challenge his students to look at issues in America and eventually create their own documentary that tries to the answer two essential questions asked by the curriculum: "what type of country are we?" and "what type of country do we want to be?"
