Kagan Receives Honorary Doctorate in Hong Kong
TC's Sharon Lynn Kagan received an honorary Doctorate of Education degree from the Hong Kong Institute of Education in November, in recognition of her substantial body of work in early childhood research and education policy.
TC’s Sharon Lynn Kagan received an honorary Doctorate of Education degree from the Hong Kong Institute of Education in November, in recognition of her substantial body of work in early childhood research and education policy.
Kagan —TC’s Virginia and Leonard Marx Professor of Early Childhood and Family and Co-Director of the College’s National Center for Children and Families -- is world-renowned for her research in early childhood development and policy, and her staunch advocacy of the rights of young children and their families. She has worked in the United States and for global organizations such as UNICEF, UNESCO and the World Bank. Her work in Hong Kong dates back 20 years, when she began collaborating with early childhood organizations and higher-education institutions, and assisting preschools.
Kagan was one of four individuals from diverse professions who received honorary doctorates from the Institute. The others were Ela Ramesh Bhatt, an attorney and peace activist and founder of the All-India Association of Micro Finance and the Indian School of Micro-Finance for Women; Ann Hui On-wah, considered China’s leading filmmaker; and Victor Henry Mair, an expert in the study of Chinese history, language and culture at the University of Pennsylvania.
The four were honored at a graduation ceremony in Hong Kong, at which Anthony B.L. Cheung, President of the Institute praised their “great contributions to social progress and the betterment of the humanities and education.” The Institute recognized Kagan for having “elevated early education from a historically ill-regarded and ill-funded field to one that now stands at the head of national agendas globally.”
