Dr. James N. Baldwin Appointed Chief of Staff of the State Education Department

The Board of Regents approved the appointment of James N. Baldwin as Chief of Staff of the State Education Department, which became effective on October 14, 2010.

Since 2002, Baldwin has served as the District Superintendent of Questar III, the Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) for Rensselaer, Columbia and parts of Greene Counties. As chief executive of the BOCES, Baldwin was responsible for the overall administration, operation and financial planning of the organization. To read the original story please click here.

Dr. Cristiana Mattos Assumpção Participates in 2010 Horizon Report.

Cristiana Assumpção Mattos, a TC International Alumni Network representative, was the only Brazilian representative invited to participate in the study related the 2010 Horizon Report. The seven year study was presented as a summary of emerging technologies that will have great impact on teaching and learning worldwide. This year, the study identified the cell phone as one of several technologies that are most likely to affect education in the near future. According to Christiana, many will be the advantages if the device is incorporated into teaching, including teaching students to use it safely and responsibly. Training for a Growing Epidemic

Teachers College will launch the nation's first master's degree program for diabetes educators in fall 2011. Based in the College's Department of Health and Behavior Studies and offered entirely online, the Diabetes Education and Management Program will equip clinicians and care managers with a greater, more research-based understanding of how diabetes develops and evolves across different populations. TC alumni are represented officially by the Alumni Association's Council, a board of 35 members elected to serve three-year terms. If you are interested in becoming a council member or know someone who would be an asset to the council, download a nomination form. Nominations are taken year-round, though they are not reviewed until April for appointments in May.

Welcome to the October edition of the TC Alumni Newsletter. If you have not yet participated in the brief survey from The SurveyButton Office of Alumni Relations, please click on the button to the right. The survey will take less than five minutes of your time to complete. We encourage you to share your thoughts with us so we can improve programming and resources for all TC alumni.

The Alumni Association is seeking nominations for the 2011 Distinguished Alumni & Early Career Awards - the highest honor bestowed on TC Alumni by the Alumni Association.

We invite you to nominate TC graduates who have distinguished themselves in their fields and have earned high respect among their colleagues and the general community, and whose impact is felt on a national or international level. Recent graduates who have graduated from TC in the past 10 years or less, have earned distinction in their field, and who demonstrate further future potential will be honored with the Early Career Award. Do you know an alumnus who meets these criteria? Nominate him or her today! Nominations are due by October 31, 2010.

November 8, 2010 - Policy Tourism and Policy Borrowing: Why Does It Happen and What Good Does It Do?Professor Geoff Whitty, Director of the Institute of Education, University of London, will discuss the tendency for education policy ideas to spread rapidly around the world. Drawing on examples like charter schools and high stakes testing, it will consider the educational and political drivers behind policy exchange and the various ways in which it operates. The lecture will also explore some broader questions about the use of research evidence and the growing role of think tanks and philanthropy in education policy making on both sides of the Atlantic.
