Exhibition: Selected Works from the Ziegfeld Collection

The Offit Gallery
The Ziegfeld Collection comprises about 350 paintings, drawings, prints and collages made by adolescents aged 10 to 18 from 32 countries across the world. The Collection was originated in the 1950’s by Dr. Edwin Ziegfeld (1905–1983), the creator of the arts and education program at Teachers College. The artworks were collected after the Second World War and first exhibited in 1957 in The Hague, the Netherlands. The artworks within the Ziegfeld Collection were chosen from thousands of submissions received from around the world during the 1950s, and they were ultimately selected for their "ability to capture the ideas, perception, and spirit of the adolescent experience."

The Gottesman Libraries, Everett Café
The Gottesman Libraries will display headlines about the history and development of the ATM, now considered indispensable to most people. On September 2, 1969 the automated teller machine made its debut appearance by dispensing cash at Chemical Bank in Rockville Center, New York. The design is credited to Don Wetzel, an executive at Docutel, a company based in Dallas that developed automated baggage-handling equipment. By 1971, ATM’s began handling multiple transactions–among them account balances, check deposits, and money transfers–slowly revolutionizing the banking industry by eliminating a person’s the need to visit a bank for help by a human teller within normal working business hours.

Dana Lampert is the founder and CEO of Wiggio, a next-generation online collaboration tool with a clear goal: to make it easy for students to work in groups. Wiggio is being utilized by groups ranging from in-class study groups and team project groups to extra curricular organizations, clubs, labs and class sections. Wiggio allows these private groups to communicate through group email, text messaging, voicemailing, video conferencing, conference calling, and online chat. Groups also have the ability to store and edit files, keep a shared calendar, poll group members and keep track of tasks and assignments. Wiggio launched in 2009 and is being used by students and faculty at over 500 colleges and 200 high schools. Open to all members of the university community. The Wadsworth Strings Ensemble features music for classical strings, from the symphonies of Mozart and Haydn, to well known arias from the operas of Puccini and Bizet, adding in a selection of continental Viennese waltzes and French cabaret. Musicians of The Claremont Strings Ensemble have performed collectively at Weill Hall, Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall and throughout the Northeast, playing a diverse range of symphonic and chamber music, eclectic jazz, and gypsy swing. Book Talk with Laura Scheiber & Juan Carlos Reyes: Unequal Fortunes: Snapshots from the South Bronx

Laura Scheiber, Ph.D. candidate, and Juan Carlos Reyes, Executive Assistant to the President of Teachers College, will read from and discuss the compelling book, Unequal Fortunes: Snapshots from the South Bronx, (Teachers College Press, June 2010). The book, which was co-authored with President Emeritus Arthur Levine, is a highly personal account of two generations growing up on the same South Bronx Street, forty years apart. Unequal Fortunes is a strong call to educators, administrators, citizens, and parents about the impact of poverty on children and the critical role of education in our lives–a plea for schools to take action and pave the way for educational success rather than failure for all American children. The talk will not only touch upon the content of the book, but also provide a unique opportunity to talk candidly with one of the research participants about what it was like to work on such a project, and lessons to be learned for future ethnographers interested in studying urban education. This book talk is jointly sponsored by Teachers College Press, Office for Diversity and Community Affairs, and Gottesman Libraries. Signed copies of the book will be available at the talk. Book Talk with Hazel Markus & Paula Moya: Doing Race

With the goal of illuminating our “trouble in talking about race,” Stanford University professors Hazel Markus and Paul Moya, of the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity, will conduct an engaging talk drawn from their newly published volume Doing Race: 21 Essays for the 21st Century (W.W. Norton). Their acclaimed, edited work begins with a conceptual overview of race and ethnicity as they fit into our everyday lives--“what [they] are, how they work, why achieving a just society requires us to take account of them.” Professors Markus and Moya will focus on eight common conversations about race and discuss why these popular conversations are flawed or incomplete; they will also reflect on the reasons for and methods in which society may develop productive conversations about race, perceived as an intricate set of human actions and interactions that tend to organize, influence, and govern our human thinking. September 16, 1872 marks the day when the armies of Generals Robert E. Lee and George McClellan met at Antietam Creek in Maryland, fighting the first battle on northern soil. Lasting two days, the Battle of Antietam is considered the bloodiest one in American history, with a total of over 22,000 casualties. McClellan did not gain victory over Lee’s army, but he stopped the Confederates from advancing further north, as Lee withdrew across the Potomac River and the Union declared a draw. The battle paved the way for Abraham Lincoln to declare preliminary justification for the Emancipation Proclamation and end the Civil War. Newspapers from the day document the amazing details and impact of the Battle of Antietam, a cornerstone in American military history.

Join us for a screening and discussion of The End of Poverty (Cinema Libre Studio), a stunning, provocative documentary, made by award-winning filmmaker Philippe Diaz and narrated by Martin Sheen, that questions our misuse and over-consumption of the Earth’s resources. The film features expert insights from Nobel Prize winners, acclaimed authors, university professors, government ministers, and the leaders of social movements on the history and impact of global poverty. Augustine has been in many opera productions in New York, including Carnegie Hall and SummerStage in Central Park. Dan has been playing guitar for 30 years and taught music to preschoolers at the YM & YWHA of Inwood.

American explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark conducted the first overland journey from the Mississippi River to the Pacific coast and back, aiming to explore the territory of the Louisiana Purchase—land previously owned by the French. President Thomas Jefferson commissioned his private secretary, Lewis, and his army captain, Clark on this expedition to learn more about the Northwest. The news display will feature educational articles about the discoveries made on Lewis and Clark’s expedition.

News Display: Warren Commission Report

On September 27, 1964 the Warren Commission, comprised of a team of U.S. senators, citizens, and a Chief Justice, produced a report on circumstances surrounding the assassination of President John F. Kennedy who was shot on November 22, 1963. The Commission was appointed by Kennedy’s successor Linden B. Johnson, whose administration made the results of their report public; it was reported that the bullets that had killed President Kennedy were fired by Lee Harvey Oswald from a rifle pointed out a sixth-floor window of the Texas School Book Depository. In addition the Commission reported that it had found no evidence that either Oswald or Jack Ruby, who was charged with Oswald’s murder, was in any way conspiratorial. The findings were questioned in ensuing years, as measures were taken to enhance the security of government officials--making assassination of a president or vice president a federal offense.

Book Talk with Jessica Hoffmann Davis: Ordinary Gifted Children: The Power and Promise of Individual Attention

Situated in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, the Hoffmann School for Individual Attention is the subject of an uplifting educational memoir, Ordinary Gifted Children (Teachers College Press, 2010), by Jessica Hoffmann Davis. Ann Hoffmann, her mother, a born teacher and talented, visionary educator who embraced students in which other teachers lacked faith and hope, directed the Hoffmann School for nearly four decades. Believing that all children are gifted, Ann Hoffman took them under her wing, helped them to learn, and instilled a love of learning. “‘What would you like to do?’ she’d ask the children, believing in her heart and mind that children knew exactly what they needed and that the adult’s job was to listen carefully enough to follow their lead.”

Book Talk with TC alumna Tatyana Kleyn: Teaching in 2 Languages: A Guide for K–12 Bilingual Educators

On Wednesday, September 29, Tatyana Kleyn, alumna of Teachers College, will discuss her new book, co-authored by Sharon Adelman Reyes, Teaching in 2 Languages: A Guide for K–12 Bilingual Educators. Dr. Kleyn’s text is written for the bilingual teacher, addressing specific approaches, methodologies, and strategies for teaching in bilingual classrooms, within social context of bilingual education. Tatyana Kleyn is an assistant professor at The City College of New York in the Bilingual Education and TESOL program. In 2007 she received her Ed.D. from Teachers College, Columbia University in International Educational Development, with a specialization in Bilingual/Bicultural Education. In 2008 she received the second place Outstanding Dissertation Award from the National Association for Bilingual Education. She has published nationally and internationally on the cultural, linguistic, and educational needs of the Garífuna people in Honduras. Joining the book talk is María Torres-Guzmán, Professor of Bilingual Education in the International and Transcultural Studies Department at Teachers College. Extensively published in the field, Dr. Torres-Guzmán served as Sponsor on Tatyana’s dissertation committee.

Guitarist T Fleisher is a graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston. Mr. Fleisher released a well-received CD, “Mirage,” with multi-instrumentalist Paul Briggs and is the singer/song writer/guitarist for the progressive rock group cyber garden who are now completing their second CD. He has worked with a wide variety of artists, including Mark Whitecage, Perry Robinson, Rick Derringer, Jimmy Cliff and David Darling. Jim Corter has been playing bass professionally since high school. He studied string bass with a number of teachers including the principal bassists of the Toronto Symphony, the National Symphony, and the North Carolina Symphony, and jazz improvisation with Jerry Coker. He has played with bands and some noted jazz artists on both coasts. One of TC’s own, Dr. Miranda is an adjunct assistant professor in the music department where he teaches percussion. As a latin-jazz “vibes” player, Angelo has a strong affinity for the music of Cal Tjader but he is also a diverse drumset player where for example, he is regarded as one of the most versatile and tasteful drummers on the American-Hungarian music scene. Angelo is the Video Services Coordinator at TC and gives workshops on sound and video production for the CIS department.
