TC Hosts Conference on Intercultural and Bilingual Education in Latin America

On Thursday evening and Friday, October 6th and 7th, international scholars will gather at TC to discuss the importance and growth in Latin America of intercultural and bilingual education that has been spurred by trade and cross-cultural activity.

Growth in global trade and cultural exchange has increased the need for bilingual and cultural literacy across the globe. Over the next two days, top scholars from around the world will gather at Teachers College to share their research and most current thinking about the emergence of bilingual and bicultural education in Latin America as an academic discipline.


The conference, titled "Reconstructing National Identities: Intercultural Bilingual Education in Latin America," will take place , from 5-8 pm, and October 7th, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15, in rooms throughout Grace Dodge Hall.


Hosted by Regina Cortina, Associate Professor of Education, Department of International and Transcultural Studies, the conference at Teachers College, Columbia University will feature three talks on October 6:


  • Widening Gaps between Policy and Practice in Intercultural Education in Latin America, by Luis Enrique Lpez, Deutsche Gesellschaft fr Internationale Zusammenarbeit;
  • David and Goliath: National Language/Literacy Policies and the Global Economy, by Shirley Brice Heath, Stanford University; and
  • Civil Society, the German Cooperation and the Education of Indigenous Communities in Peru, by Regina Cortina.


Also featured will be the following panels on October 7:

  • International Cooperation, Knowledge Creation and the Development of the Academic Field of Intercultural and Bilingual Education, chaired by Sylvia Schmelkes, Universidad Iberoamericana, and including Regina Cortina; Nancy Hornberger, University of Pennsylvania; and Bret Gustafson, Washington University in St. Louis.
  • Intercultural and Bilingual Education and Social Movements across Latin America, chaired by Bret Gustafson and including Carmen Martinez, Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales, Ecuador; Monica Navarro, Universit Catholique de Louvain, Belgium; and Laura Valdiviezo, University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
  • Social and Political Actors and the Institutionalization of Intercultural Bilingual Education, chaired by Pamela Calla, New York University, and including Sylvia Schmelkes and Luis Enrique Lopez.
