TC Study Finds Middling Performance by U.S. Colleges

A study led by TC's Corbin Campbell (reported in The Chronicle of Higher Education and Inside Higher Ed) finds strong teaching of in-depth material but a dearth of effective practices like in-class discussion. Verdict: There's room to grow.
In the first pilot of the TC's College Educational Quality Project, Corbin Campbell, Assistant Professor of Higher Education,and 10 students studied two selective, midsize research institutions, one public and the other private. Based on the team's observation of 153 courses and 149 syllabi to assess academic rigor and the quality of teaching at the two institutions, Campbell concluded that "There are some strong educational processes happening," but that the institutions were "not maximizing their educational capacity."
