TC's Garber Becomes President of the American College of Sports Medicine

In late May, Carol Ewing Garber, Associate Professor of Movement Sciences, assumed the presidency of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).

ACSM is the largest sports medicine and exercise science organization in the world. With more than 60,000 members and certified professionals worldwide, ACSM is dedicated to advancing and integrating scientific research to provide educational and practical applications of exercise science and sports medicine. The organization’s mission is to advance and integrate scientific research to provide educational and practical applications of exercise science and sports medicine.

Garber is an authority on the role of physical activity in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases; community and clinical interventions to promote physical activity; the promotion of physical activity in young, low income children and their families; novel delivery systems for providing clinical exercise physiology interventions; and physical activity in older adults.

In 2011, an ACSM committee led by Garber issued new recommendations for the optimum amount and type of exercise necessary to maintain good health. The recommendations broke new ground in definitively answering “the age-old question of how much exercise is actually enough” (for most adults, 30 minutes daily, at least five days a week, of moderate-intensity exercise) and in suggesting that people minimize sedentary activities. It was also unique in stating that some physical activity is better than none at all.

A subsequent report co-authored by Garber found that people who exercise 2.5 to 7.5 hours per week report better mental health than those who exercise more or less than that amount.

In disseminating such findings, Garber has shown a willingness to work both with mainstream health leaders and figures in popular culture: at the ACSM annual meeting, held this year in Orlando, FL, Ewing Garber met with Acting US. Surgeon General RADM Boris Lushniak and Hip Hop Artist Doug E. Fresh.
