TC Faculty Member Named NYS Deputy Secretary for Education
Elana Sigall, Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Education Policy and Social Analysis at Teachers College, has been named New York State’s Deputy Secretary for Education by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo.

Sigall is a former Brooklyn public high school teacher who most recentlyserved as Chief Policy Officer of the Division of Students with Disabilities and English Language Learners at the New York City Department of Education, where she designed, launched, led and managed a number of new offices and programs.

She is also an attorney who has specialized in education-related legal issues and is currently also an adjunct faculty member at Columbia University School of Law.  Her clients have included charter schools and the ACLU Women’s Rights Project. She has served as General Counsel and Director of External Affairs for a non-profit charter-school operator, The Learning Project, and was also a corporate associate at Debevoise & Plimpton and a foreign attorney at Nishimura & Partners in Tokyo. She has written articles for various publications, including The American Lawyer.

Sigall also has held a number of public and private sector education policy and legal counsel positions. She earned her undergraduate degree from Princeton University and her law degree from Harvard.
