As families begin the journey of working and learning remotely, educational games carry additional appeal as immersive learning tools capable of leveraging student interests for creative instruction. One of those games is Beats Empire, which with funding from the National Science Foundation and co-developed by TC’s Nathan Holbert — Assistant Professor of Communication, Media and Learning Technologies Design — positions young users as decision-makers in the music business and provides opportunities to learn about market trends and data analysis.

“Few tools exist to support teachers in determining how and what their students are learning,” Holbert, director of TC’s Snow Day Learning Lab, recently told Filament Games. “Our project aims to fill that gap by providing teachers with a tool that will give actionable information about what their students are learning and with what they’re struggling.”
