What do you hope to accomplish from pursuing the TCP program this year?

As a diplomat’s daughter, I spent my entire childhood using English as a second language. The learning experience was challenging, but there was nothing more joyful than the ability to communicate with people from all over the world. I wanted to share that joy when I signed up for the Columbia TCP program. I hope to become a better classroom manager, strategic teacher, and an understanding supporter.

How has the TCP helped to accomplish your professional development goals so far?

TCP was more than I expected in every aspect. The classes have been intense but engaging, and assignments thought-provoking. In addition, the mentorship has been inspiring, and workshops informative. Even during the online portion, teachers made sure that they were present to answer any questions or help with any difficulties. I appreciated the effort they put in order to minimize the barrier than the online system can hold. 

The onsite portion has been very exciting. You can practice to teach every week with the micro-teaching, co-teaching, and the Practicum. During the Practicum, your mentor will be there at the back of the classroom to write down copious notes about your teaching. She will then spend time with you, personally, to give feedback and discuss ways to improve your management and teaching skills. I believe this experience can strongly help me to get out of my comfort zone and grow as a teacher by the time of graduation.

Is there anything else you would like to share about your program experience?

I would like to acknowledge the great impact of the following on my professional growth in the Program:

People: People you meet at the TCP program will be among the nicest, most interesting and intelligent people you will encounter in your life. I am a Fall-Spring student. So, I had to balance the online portion with a full-time job and care for my toddler baby. It was a challenge to meet deadlines, and complete the readings and the lectures. However, all of my teachers, mentors, and peers were very encouraging. They all made sure I was learning in classes, performing my best, and growing as a teacher. Take time to get to know them! 

Co-Teaching & Mentorship: This is a very unique experience. You rarely get a chance to observe other teachers “teaching,” and to make mistakes to improve yourself as a teacher. I am grateful for my co-teachers and my mentor.

TESOL Workshops: I love the fun and useful workshops organized by the TCP. I hope to join more of the workshops whenever I visit New York City.
