Dear Members of the TC Community,
I am writing to provide an update, as I know concerns remain high in light of federal actions and their impact on higher education and Teachers College in particular. I also want to acknowledge the apprehension that many of our community members have about our international students’ ability to obtain visas to start or continue programs. While there is no new action affecting our community at this time, we are working hard to support our institution overall as we look ahead. As you know, there is legislation working its way through Congress that could affect student loans and our institutional financial situation, so we are taking actions now to ensure the College’s strength as we face these external uncertainties.
Actions relating to international students: Thanks to the efforts of our OISS Director and staff, I’m pleased to report we have shortened our turnaround time for I-20 processing for our international students. This is a certificate that enables those students to enter the U.S. to study once they are accepted to our programs. This is a crucial first step to securing a visa. The Provost’s Office, Office of International Students and Scholars, Office of the General Counsel and the Division of Enrollment & Student Success have worked together to support current and admitted international students; faculty have kept in close touch with students and we are providing webinars and individualized support on immigration issues. Department chairs and program directors are further working to develop options for students who experience visa delay or denial.
Actions relating to financial resource management: Given the uncertain nature of our funding sources related to federal and public grants, enrollment fluctuations and potential restrictions on student loans, we are taking the proactive step of extending a hiring freeze, in place since April, through at least August 31. I want to note that this action is not taken lightly, and I recognize that there are implications to our teams and workloads that our managers will need to consider. However, this is an important step we must take now as we prepare to weather the potential storms ahead and preserve our work, our current staffing, and our ability to carry forward our critical mission. Our HR team will be in touch with hiring managers with further details, including position exemptions that are critical to our operations.
Over the weeks ahead, I will continue to work with our peers and allies across the higher education, funding and government relations sectors to ensure we are doing everything we can to preserve our historic institution. As always, I am grateful for the patience of our community members, and encourage you to be in touch with your managers should you have any questions.
With best wishes,
Thomas Bailey
