Dear TC Community Members,

This week’s ceremonies recognizing our graduates were as much an exuberant celebration of accomplishment as they were a reflection of all the hard work and commitment it takes to pursue our unique paths. Across all the graduation ceremonies, it was an extraordinary privilege for me to see the many families and friends who were part of this journey, and the great joy in the eyes of all those who crossed the stage at the United Palace Theater, along with those who joined us last night in our Breaking Ground ceremony—a celebration of our first generation graduates and those of many diverse backgrounds.

Last week, I also had the honor of visiting West Point to recognize the 20th anniversary of the Eisenhower Leader Development Program and the 10th anniversary of the Benavidez Leader Development Program and celebrate with program graduates there, too. Standing with those service members was a reminder of the personal sacrifices we all make in service of our values.

Indeed, we are each driven by our personal principles, scholarly pursuits and individual contributions to the public good. This unites us in our convictions to make the world better, even as we may take different directions. What’s important is that we stay focused and work together on common goals.

These are extremely challenging times in higher education. Our work across the fields of education, health, and psychology remains vital, as is our dedication to sustaining an environment that meets the needs of our community members who come to Teachers College from across the nation and around the globe. We will stay vigilant and work to protect and strengthen our historic institution.

As we head into a long Memorial Day weekend, I hope you each take time for a restorative break over the days ahead. I offer my best wishes to all for the summer months.

Sincerely,

Thomas Bailey
