Meet the Urban Refugee Education Team


Mary Mendenhall
Project Director and Co-PI

Mary Mendenhall is an Assistant Professor of Practice in the International and Comparative Education Program at Teachers College, Columbia University. Her research interests include refugee education across camp, urban and resettlement contexts as well as teacher support and professional development in crisis settings, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Susan Garnett Russell
Co-PI

Susan Garnett Russell is an Assistant Professor in the International and Comparative Education Program at Teachers College, Columbia University. Her research focuses on areas linked to education and conflict, transitional justice, human rights education, and citizenship in Sub-Saharan Africa, including Rwanda, South Africa, and Burundi.

Elizabeth Buckner
Research Investigator

Elizabeth Buckner is a Visiting Assistant Professor of International and Comparative Program and Middle East Studies at Teachers College, Columbia University. Her primary research interests include globalization, privatization, higher education, international development policy, and the Middle East and North Africa region.

Peter Bjorklund
Graduate Research Assistant and Alumnus (May 2016)

Peter completed his Master of Education in the International and Comparative Education program at Teachers College in May 2016. He is now pursuing his doctorate at the University of California - San Diego. His research interests include teachers education and how social and interactional factors affect teachers' pedagogy, trust, self-efficacy, and identity.

Jihae Cha
Graduate Research Assistant

Jay is a first year doctoral fellow and Ed.D. student in International Educational Development at Teachers College, Columbia University. Jay's research interests include discovering the role of academic, linguistic and psychosocial factors in elevating refugee students' learning motivation as well as teacher professional development programs in conflict-affected settings.

Danielle Falk
Graduate Research Assistant

Danni Falk is a second year Master's student at Teachers College, Columbia University in the International and Comparative Education Program. Her research interests include Education in Emergencies and teacher professional development, as well as advancing access to and quality of education for refugees. 

Diana Rodriguez-Gomez
Graduate Research Assistant and Alumna (May 2016)

Diana completed her Doctor of Education in the International and Comparative Education program at Teachers College in May 2016. She is now an Assistant Professor in the Education Department at Universidad de Los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia. Her research interests gravitate around the intersections between violence and education in Latin America. Her research areas include educational policy and forced migration, and educational development.

Dominique Spencer
Graduate Research Assistant

Dominique is a Master of Arts student in the International and Comparative Education program at Teachers College, Columbia University. Her research interests include the intersections between education policy, refugee education, and psychosocial support in emergencies, with regional expertise in the Middle East and North Africa.
