Margaret Crocco, Special Assistant to the Provost of the University of Iowa and former TC Professor of Social Studies and Education, led development of the groundbreaking social studies curriculum Teaching the Levees:“Teaching The Levees: A Curriculum for Democratic Dialogue and Civic Engagement,” a 112-page multimedia tool that explores civic issues raised by Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. Launched in 2007, the curriculum is keyed to director Spike Lee’s four-hour HBO documentary When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts. Thirty thousand copies of a boxed set, published by TC Press, that combined the curriculum with a DVD of the film, were distributed free of charge to schools, churches and community organizations around the country, and the curriculum continues to be regularly downloaded by new users.Crocco is an authority on diversity issues in social studies education; the history of citizenship education; technology and the social studies; and teacher education. She is the author of several books, including Clio in the Classroom: A Guide to Teaching US Women’s History (Oxford University Press, 2009), Social Studies and the Press: Keeping the Beast at Bay? (Information Age Publishers, 2005), Learning to Teach in an Age of Accountability (Lawrence Erlbaum Associates),"Bending the Future to Their Will": Civic Women, Social Education, and Democracy (Rowman and Littlefield), andPedagogies of Resistance: Women Educator Activists, 1880-1960 (Teachers College Press).
