Professor Chen Chao's presentation on staff-faculty ratio in public universities
Professor Chen Chao, a visiting scholar from Naikai University of China, presented his research on the March 3 of 2014. His topic is on the ratio of administrators and administrative staff-to-faculty in public universities and its implications.
The major part of the study focused on empirically analyzing the ratio of administrators and administrative staff-to-faculty of Sino-American public universities, based on data collected from universities’ official websites. Data covered 27 flagship public universities in 50 states of the U.S. and 14 universities selected from China’s list of 985 universities. Among the U.S. universities, the average staff-faculty ratio calculated for 1995-96, 2005-06 and 2012-13 is 3.79, which varied from 1.42 (University of Hawaii) to 9. 42 (University of Berkeley); and it has a declining trend. In the 2012-13 academic year, the average ratio of administrators and administrative staff-to-faculty of Chinese universities is 1.09, and it will be sustainable in a long period. Further discussion was presented regarding the implications of these findings.
