With a festive ribbon-cutting on Oct. 28, members of the Teachers College community celebrated the new Cowin Student Success Hub, which convenes resources across departments to offer centralized support and foster the best experience and educational outcomes for TC students.
The project is the latest development in the College’s strategic priority to advance student pathways from admission to graduation and beyond. Located in Horace Mann 242, the Hub centralizes access to enrollment, academic success, student wellness, and financial aid, and also serves as a beautiful new space for students to collaborate, network, convene and study — a milestone designed to concretely transform the student experience at Teachers College.
“We are committed to helping each of our students reach their greatest potential,” says President Thomas Bailey, who has made enhancing student support and facilitating pathways to success a core priority of the College since taking office in 2018. “The new Cowin Student Success Hub is a critical component of that vision as it eases student burdens by having many of their needs met in one place.”
The Hub is named for Trustee Emerita Joyce Berger Cowin (M.A. ’52), who joined students in cheering during celebratory remarks that also expressed deep gratitude for Cowin’s support and longtime service to the College as a Trustee for more than 40 years.
“When student support services are centrally located, students can allocate more energy to their academic goals and dreams,” said Megan Massaro, Executive Director of Enrollment Management. “We know that this one-stop opportunity will help enable our students to focus on their work.”
Cowin’s leadership and service to the College has been essential to the development of this new offering. Her vision for student success is also visible in the new Cowin Career Closet; the Cowin Emergency Fund the Joyce B. Cowin Scholarship; the Joyce Berger Cowin Conference Center; the Heritage School; and the Cowin Financial Literacy Program, which has provided more than 5,000 educators with free professional development to teach personal finance since 2012.
Now with the Cowin Student Success Hub, students can easily access individualized support in one place, and enjoy an extensive lounge space, computer lab and conference rooms. Serving approximately 5,000 students each year, this office will work to foster student success while they are enrolled at the College, ensuring progress toward their individual goals, career readiness, and degree completion.
Services available at the Cowin Student Success Hub include:
- Financial Aid
- Registrar
- Graduate Student Life and Development (GSLD), which provides students with both academic support and social opportunities to enhance their time at TC
- Student Support & Advocacy, which connects students to health and wellness resources available at TC, Columbia and within NYC throughout their graduate school journey.
- TC NEXT, the College’s the career services and professional development office
President Bailey also recognized the many teams across the College who joined in creating the Hub, including staff from Facilities, Information Technologies, Enrollment Management and Student Affairs.
Created in response to feedback from the TC Student Senate, the Cowin Student Success Hub will also be supported by a ticketing system that allows for the timely, efficient, and accurate intake, escalation and resolution of a variety of student needs in a streamlined manner.
