To solve New York’s economic and social challenges, the city’s next mayor must leverage education to its fullest extent, writes President Thomas Bailey in an op-ed for the New York Daily News — published as candidates take the general election debate stage for the first time.

“Leading New York City means leading it into the future. The next mayor’s choices on schools will determine whether our economy stays competitive, our neighborhoods are livable, and our children are prepared for the world ahead,” writes Bailey, an economist whose groundbreaking research in student pathways has prioritized how schools can optimize student success post-grad. “As debates begin, New Yorkers should hear clear answers: How will classrooms connect to careers? How will schools get the resources they need? How will educators be supported?”

Examining the realities of New York City’s economy and the challenges schools face, Bailey outlines more specific obstacles for candidates to consider at a critical inflection point for New York City, its students and the future.
