The Myers Art Prize is an annual juried art competition open to all students currently enrolled in the Art and Art Education Program at Teachers College, Columbia University. Each year a new, relevant theme for the competition is announced and a notable figure from the art world is invited to serve as guest juror. The juried competition culminates in a celebrated exhibition of the winning artworks in the Macy Art Gallery and with the distribution of a select number of monetary awards. This year’s exhibition will be on view to the public January 18 – February 12, 2021. The award-winning works will also become part of the Teachers College Art and Art Education Program’s permanent collection. 2021 MYERS ART PRIZE THEME: RESILIENCE Works submitted to the competition should relate to the practice of resilience during a time of social and political unrest and isolation.

RULES AND GUIDELINES

All current students enrolled in a degree track in the Art and Art Education Program are eligible to submit one artwork. The submission deadline is Tuesday, December 1, 2020 (11:59 pm).

*Winning artwork will become part of the Teachers College, Art and Art Education Program’s permanent collection. By submitting artwork to this juried exhibition students are asked to agree to surrender their artwork to the gallery before the exhibition.

ACCEPTABLE ARTWORK SUBMISSIONS

  • Artwork created within the last calendar year (January 2020 – December 2020) 
  • Two-dimensional, three-dimensional, mixed-media, performance or new media
  • Artwork that is free-standing, wall-mounted, or projected

UNACCEPTABLE ARTWORK SUBMISSIONS

  • Artwork should not exceed four feet in any one direction (height, width, depth)
  • Artwork should not contain any perishable or hazardous materials

SUBMISSION LABEL INFORMATION

Must be completed through the MYERS SUBMISSION FORM and include:

  • Artist Name
  • Degree
  • Artwork Title
  • Year of Completion
  • Media
  • Dimensions (height x width x depth, if applicable)
  • Artist Statement
  • Artwork Assembly and Accessibility Information for the Macy Art Gallery Archives
  • Digital Image: 2-D: One digital image, at least 5MB in size; 3-D: Two (or more) digital images from different angles, at least 5MB in size; Video, Performance, or New Media: A clip (No longer than two minutes)

ARTIST STATEMENT

The artist statement should detail the process and developments addressed in the work submitted (200-250 words) Suggested areas to address in the statement: 

  • What ideas, challenges, problems, questions, or events inspired the creation of this work? 
  • What was the process of the work’s development?
  • How do your materials and actions inform the work’s meaning? 
  • What are the larger or smaller themes the work may evoke? 
  • How does this particular piece fit into your larger artistic practice?

ARTWORK ACCESSIBILITY AND ASSEMBLY INFORMATION

The description should include the general content and design of the artwork. This information will assist viewers and the future Macy Art Gallery team in handling the artworks.

SELECTED ARTWORKS

Entrants will be notified about the juror’s selection on Monday, December 21, 2020. All selected work must be:

  • Delivered to Macy Art Gallery dropped off in MY 446 NO LATER than Monday, January 11th , 2021, 5:00pm. 
  • To schedule a drop off appointment email Carina Maye (cm3767@tc.columbia.edu) 
  • Label information (artist name, title, date, medium) should be attached to the back of the work. 
  • Framed or outfitted with appropriate hardware for display (any work not prepared to hang will not be shown if not prepared by Friday, January 15th , 2021). 
  • Delivered in protective packaging

Failure to follow submission guidelines will disqualify the applicant. Selected work will become part of the permanent art collection at Teachers College. It is required that all submissions be of high material quality and built to withstand the test of time while both in storage and on display.

Selected artworks will be on view in the exhibition RESILIENCE: Myers Art Prize January 18 – February 12, 2021. These works will thereafter also be included in the annual Myers Art Prize exhibition catalog online and print publication.

Should the College not permit the Program to hold the Myers Prize exhibition in person this Spring, the Macy Art Gallery staff will be in touch with award winning artists to clarify the new exhibition parameters.

*All monetary awards will be processed through the Art and Art Education Program Office after the de-installation of the exhibition.
