Celia Genishi | Mini Moments With Big Thinkers

Beware "the invasion of the academic" in preschools, warns TC's Celia Genishi in this week's installment of TC's "Mini Moments with Big Thinkers." Genishi says that unstructured play is a universal cultural activity that opens intellectual possibilities in all directions. 

Celia Genishi, Professor of Education and Co-Coordinator of the Program in Early Childhood Education inTC’s Department of Curriculum & Teaching, is an authority on early childhood education, language in the classroom, qualitative research and childhood bilingualism. She is the author of Ways of Assessing Children and Curriculum: Stories of Early Childhood Practice (Teachers College Press), The Need for Story: Cultural Diversity in Classroom and Community (National Council of Teachers of English), Children, Language and Literacy: Diverse Learners in Diverse Times (with Anne Haas Dyson; Teachers College Press); and On The Case: Approaches to Language and Literacy Research (with Anne Haas Dyson; Teachers College Press). In 2012, the American Educational Research Association honored Genishi with its Scholars of Color Distinguished Career Contribution Award, Division G Mentoring Award, and Critical Perspectives in Early Childhood Education Distinguished Career Contribution Award. Genishi also is a past recipient of the Advocate for Justice Award from the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education
