History

Current Issues in Comparative Education (CICE) is an open-access academic journal based at Teachers College, Columbia University. The journal was established in March 1997 by a group of doctoral students at Teachers College who sought to create a forum for critical dialogue on pressing educational issues from comparative and international perspectives.

Guided by Prof. Gita Steiner-Khamsi, the founding student editors included individuals who have since become leading scholars, including Dana Burde, Elizabeth Cassity, Carolyn Kissane, Jamie Lew, Cathryn Magno, Iveta Silova, Noah Sobe, Carol-Anne Spreen, and Bernhard Streitwieser. As students engaged in the field of international and comparative education, they greatly contributed to shaping the journal’s mission, editorial direction, and early development.

CICE has been envisioned as a space that would amplify emerging scholarly voices while fostering rigorous engagement with global educational debates. Over time, the student-led journal has grown into a recognized and respected source of scholarship in comparative and international education. The journal continues to promote interdisciplinary exchange and to encourage contributions that draw on related fields such as sociology, economics, philosophy, history, anthropology, and political science.

Today, CICE continues to publish peer-reviewed articles that make meaningful contributions to research, policy discussions, and practice across disciplinary perspectives, contexts, and methodological approaches with the support of a vibrant faculty who serve as the International Advisory Board.
