Curriculum

ESL Integrated Skills Classes are designed around general topics and themes, which focus on all four skills (i.e., listening, speaking, reading, and writing) and grammar. We offer the following proficiency levels: Beginner, Elementary, Lower-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate, and Advanced.

Courses at this level will prepare students to understand and use everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type; to introduce themselves and others and to ask and answer questions about personal details such as where they live, people they know and things they have. They will be able to interact in a very simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

Courses at this level will prepare students to understand and use basic structures and vocabulary for everyday activities; to interact in simple social situations, and make simple suggestions and requests. They will also be able to write simple descriptions and use basic cohesive devices and to write simple everyday texts.

Courses at this level will prepare students to understand and use a combination of simple and compound structures and high frequency intermediate vocabulary in order to communicate in familiar work and social situations. They also will be able to write simple texts for familiar work and social situations by using an increasing range of structuring and cohesive devices.

Courses at this level will prepare students to use some compound and complex structures; to understand the main ideas of longer listening excerpts and reading texts; to draw on an increasing range of language resources to carry out a number of social and work functions. They will also be able to write clear detailed texts on a range of subjects and express and support their opinion.

Courses at this level will prepare students to understand the main ideas of complex texts on bothconcrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in their field of specialization; to interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. They will be able to produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

 

This course will prepare students to comprehend, analyze, and interpret a wide range of texts, and will enable learners to express themselves fluently and spontaneously using increasingly sophisticated and precise language. Through project-based learning, students will be able to produce clear, well-structured, and detailed oral and written texts on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices, and with awareness of the audience and context. Students will also be able to use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. These courses are uniquely designed for advanced level students and will have a different thematic focus every term.
