A social and emotional learning (SEL) program supports students to be more effective by increasing emotional intelligence. The EQ Educator Institute provides insights and tools to effectively lead SEL by teaching and modeling learnable skills proven to increase academic and life success. Using the Six Second Model, this intensive 3-day course equips educators to be more effective in teaching, modeling, and integrating these elements of Social Emotional Learning by starting with the essential foundation: Our own EQ growth as educators. Then, for education leaders interested in extending the institute content to address issues of schoolwide implementation, we will offer quarterly follow up webinars on this topic.

As part of a unique collaboration with Summer Principals Academy - New Orleans and the Urban Education Leaders Collaborative at Teachers College, Columbia University and Six Seconds The Emotional Intelligence Institute, this three-day institute will be offered on Loyola Law School’s campus in New Orleans for educators and education leaders.


Learning Objectives

Through this institute, educators will:

  • Develop a clear “case” for emotional intelligence
  • Explore the Six Seconds Model, a process framework for making intelligence practical
  • Review some of the latest research on the brain, emotions, and learning
  • Confidently develop and implement SEL lessons and activities in their classroom
  • Apply the Six Seconds Self-Science process and model in their day-to-day interactions with students
  • Evaluate their SEL practice using the Six Seconds Benchmarks for EQ implementation in schools
  • Effectively communicate the value of SEL to parents, other educators, and the school leaders using the EQ Educator starter kit
  • Deepen their own emotional intelligence to be more insightful, connected and purposeful

The Benefits of The EQ Educator

A growing body of research demonstrates that an evidence-based approach to social emotional learning helps students increase academic achievement and do better in life. Plus, over 75% of teachers say it’s a major benefit for students: It’s a win-win.

Teachers who include SEL in their classrooms report a more effective learning environment, better problem-solving skills, and stronger interpersonal connections – and they end up having more time to pursue all their instructional goals.

While most teachers see the value in teaching their students to effectively understand and manage emotions, few teachers have experienced this kind of learning themselves. As a result, even very experienced teachers have a limited number of strategies and techniques to systematically teach social and emotional skills.

An effective SEL program includes:

Co-Leaders and Facilitators

Joshua Freedman, MCC, is the Chief Executive Officer at Six Seconds. One of the world’s preeminent experts on developing emotional intelligence to improve performance, Joshua leads the world’s largest network of emotional intelligence practitioners, researchers, and experts, creating positive change in over 125 nations. He is one of a handful of experts in the world with over 20 years of full-time experience in this emerging field. His clients include FedEx, Intel, Etihad Airways, Amazon, Microsoft, the UN, all branches of the US armed services, and numerous organizations around the globe.

He co-developed Six Seconds’ EQ Certification Training which he has delivered on five continents as master-trainer to thousands of professionals seeking practical tools for learning and teaching emotional intelligence, and has helped launch emotional intelligence programs and companies in over a dozen countries.

Freedman is author of the international bestseller, At the Heart of Leadership, The Vital Organization, as well as INSIDE CHANGE: Transforming Your Organization with Emotional Intelligence, plus Whole-Hearted Parenting, and dozens of cases and articles including The Business Case for Emotional Intelligence, and The Workplace Vitality Report. He is coauthor of six validated psychometric assessments including the EQ Leadership Report and the Organizational Vital Signs climate measure, as well as several books and training programs including the Management Foundations and the pioneering approach to social emotional learning, Self-Science. He is also a Master Certified Coach by the International Coach Federation.

Dr. Lorea Martinez is a Social Emotional Learning Consultant, supporting implementation of SEL programs and teaching educators the principles of emotional intelligence. Her clients include Aspire Public Schools, New Schools Venture Fund, Learning Policy Institute, Facebook, Nearpod, LEEP Dual Language Academies, and public, private and charter schools. Her favorite emotions are curiosity, courage and serenity.

Lorea approaches the implementation of SEL programs with the expertise of a practitioner and the rigor of a researcher. A former special education teacher, Lorea has served students and adults in Spain, Nicaragua, and California, and has led several successful innovative initiatives in schools. Lorea’s doctoral dissertation received highest honors from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and won the 2014 Graduate Student Award for Excellence in SEL Research from the American Association of Educational Research (AERA). A testimony of the impact SEL can have on students and teachers, her research identifies the conditions that make SEL implementation possible in schools. Lorea is an active member of the SEL research community, currently conducting research on school climate, SEL implementation and school principals’ emotional intelligence. She is part of the leadership committee at AERA’s SEL Special Interest Group.

A published author, Lorea’s work can be found in the International Journal of Emotional Education, the Advances in SEL Research, the Manual de Orientación y Tutoría, and the well-known educational website Edutopia. She frequently blogs about how to incorporate SEL in teaching practices.

Dr. Sarah E. Benis Scheier-Dolberg is the Associate Director of the Urban Education Leaders Collaborative (UELC) and Summer Principals Academy | New Orleans (SPA|NOLA) at Columbia University Teachers College. Dr. BSD is a faculty member in SPA|NOLA, co-teaching the Introduction to Leadership and Decision Making course and School Leadership Internship course for aspiring school leaders completing their master’s degree at Teachers College. In her role with the UELC, Dr. BSD works in partnership with urban district leaders in New York, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Durham, and other major cities to develop and deliver professional development programming for district-level and building-level leaders. In her leadership work at the UELC, Dr. BSD creates collaborative spaces for leaders to learn, innovate, and improve decision-making within the context of complex, real-world leadership problems in urban education systems. UELC modules, co-authored by Dr. Benis Scheier-Dolberg, span a vast range of topics relevant for urban education leaders.

Dr. BSD also serves as a leadership coach and literacy specialist for schools in New York City. As a former teacher leader and professional developer, Dr. BSD brings a wealth of expertise across subject areas and grade levels. Having served as an intern in the NYC DOE Division of Students with Disabilities and English Language Learners, a high school special educator, and a Mentor Teacher and Site Director for the Boston Teacher Residency Program, Dr. BSD brings a K-12 perspective to supporting teachers and school leaders in their efforts to create inclusive learning communities. Additionally, in her work for the Boston Debate League, she led a Debate Across the Curriculum initiative to transform the practice of teams of high school teachers through integrating more student-centered, academically rigorous debate curricula across all subject areas. Dr. BSD has also been a mentor, coach, and professional developer for teachers working across varied settings to support English learners and their families. As a coach, Dr. BSD supports teachers and school leaders K-12 in the areas of Literacy, Social Studies, and Technology Integration.

Dr. BSD began her career as an educator serving as a Teaching Fellow for Citizen Schools in Boston and then moved to Japan to teach ESL. Earning an MAT at Tufts University in 2005, she holds teaching licenses in Social Studies and ESL. Dr. BSD also has an MEd and EdD in Urban Educational Leadership from Teachers College, Columbia University. She completed her undergraduate degree at Swarthmore College in 2000, earning high honors and a research award for her thesis exploring service learning in urban schools.

Continuing Education

Participants who attend the entire institute (three days) and participate in all scheduled activities will receive 2 CEUs.
