Program Description:
School Violence Prevention & Intervention Workshop
Safe schools begin with prepared educators. This two-hour, live workshop provides the training required by New York State for all individuals seeking teacher certification. Teachers College, Columbia University is a provider approved by the New York State Education Department.
Rooted in New York's Project SAVE legislation (Senate Bill 8236), this workshop equips participants with practical knowledge and evidence-based strategies to recognize, prevent, and respond to school violence.
Topics covered include:
- Trends in school violence and contributing factors
- Risk factors and warning signs of violent behavior in children and adolescents
- Laws, regulations, and policies that support a safe and nonviolent school climate
- Effective classroom management techniques and academic supports that promote a positive learning environment
- The roles and functions of student support teams, referral processes, and early intervention strategies
- Intensive and immediate interventions for students at risk of violence
- Defining, identifying, and preventing bullying in all its forms, including cyberbullying
- Problem-solving skill development and social-emotional learning within the school curriculum
- Intervention techniques for addressing school violence situations
- How all stakeholders—families, educators, and community members—can share responsibility for school culture and safety
