Program Description:

School Violence Prevention & Intervention Workshop

Safe schools begin with prepared educators. This two-hour, live workshop provides the training required by New York State for all individuals seeking teacher certification. Teachers College, Columbia University is a provider approved by the New York State Education Department.

Rooted in New York's Project SAVE legislation (Senate Bill 8236), this workshop equips participants with practical knowledge and evidence-based strategies to recognize, prevent, and respond to school violence. 

Topics covered include:

  • Trends in school violence and contributing factors
  • Risk factors and warning signs of violent behavior in children and adolescents
  • Laws, regulations, and policies that support a safe and nonviolent school climate
  • Effective classroom management techniques and academic supports that promote a positive learning environment
  • The roles and functions of student support teams, referral processes, and early intervention strategies
  • Intensive and immediate interventions for students at risk of violence
  • Defining, identifying, and preventing bullying in all its forms, including cyberbullying
  • Problem-solving skill development and social-emotional learning within the school curriculum
  • Intervention techniques for addressing school violence situations
  • How all stakeholders—families, educators, and community members—can share responsibility for school culture and safety

Format: Live Zoom Sessions

Price: $35.00

Registration will close 48-72 hours before the workshop date or when the workshop is closed/full.

This workshop is limited to 40 participants.

Participants are asked to arrive a half-hour before the workshop begins.

Latecomers will not be admitted.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify risk factors, warning signs, and behavioral indicators associated with school violence in children and adolescents
  • Describe the laws, regulations, and policies that govern school safety in New York State, including Project SAVE and the Dignity for All Students Act (DASA)
  • Apply effective classroom management strategies and school-wide practices that foster a nonviolent, supportive learning environment
  • Explain the roles of student support teams and referral processes, and distinguish between early intervention and immediate response strategies for students at risk
  • Define bullying in all its forms, including cyberbullying, and demonstrate knowledge of evidence-based approaches to prevention and intervention

Upon Completion

Participants will receive a certificate of completion, and the TC Office of Teacher Education will report completion data directly to the New York State Education Department. Participants' TEACH accounts will be updated automatically. No additional steps required.
