The Department of Education Policy and Social Analysis (EPSA) at Teachers College, Columbia University seeks applications to the EPSA Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. EPSA draws on the tools and approaches of the disciplines of economics, political science, and sociology, as well as the distinctive attributes of legal reasoning, to foster a multidisciplinary approach to the study of education policy. It is situated in Teachers College, Columbia University, the largest and most comprehensive graduate school of education in the United States. Located in New York City, the College and department are diverse; a quarter of the graduate students in EPSA are international students, and of the domestic students, more than half are persons of color. EPSA faculty are known for their public scholarship on issues such as school choice, educational equity, racial segregation, postsecondary access, and educational accountability.
The EPSA Postdoctoral Fellowship Program seeks to promote the recruitment and retention of a diverse faculty within the Department of Education Policy and Social Analysis at Teachers College. The program does this by advancing the careers of individuals from groups in U.S. society that have been historically underrepresented in the academic profession. It provides recent doctorate recipients the opportunity to develop a program of independent research and participate as an active community member in the life of a vibrant department devoted to research. This year, the Program will make one award.
The appointment is for a twelve-month period in residence at Teachers College beginning on September 1, 2017 and renewable for a second year contingent upon the availability of funds. The successful candidate is also provided with a research fund of $3,000.
The acceptance of the fellowship carries with it the commitment to conduct research as outlined in the application proposal; provide a written annual report of the research program; make a presentation at a department colloquium; and participate in an academic program within the EPSA Department. Included in this compensation package is the opportunity for the EPSA Postdoctoral Fellow to teach a graduate-level course in an area of their expertise.
The successful candidate will be matched with one or more department faculty members who can serve as appropriate research mentors and advisors. Applicants are invited to examine the EPSA website (http://www.tc.columbia.edu/education-policy-and-social-analysis) to identify possible mentors, and to name them in their application.
To apply, please submit an application letter outlining a research proposal, curriculum vitae, two writing samples (e.g., dissertation chapters, journal articles or manuscripts) and the names of three references.
In making this award, EPSA gives consideration especially to individuals who are either members of a federally recognized U.S. racial/ethnic minority group or have a federally recognized disability.
The selection committee also takes into account a range of other factors related to increasing diversity within the Department of Education Policy and Social Analysis, such as socioeconomic background, research and teaching goals that emphasize diversity, and first-generation college graduates.
