Program Description:

“Black Studies as the Study of the World: Teaching Black Studies in New York City” aims to prepare teachers to teach the forthcoming Black Studies Curriculum in New York City and develop a community that supports Black Studies. The conference serves as a platform for educating teachers, workshopping curriculum, and engaging resources like scholars and educators.

The conference is designed for teachers, parents and parent coordinators, school and district leaders, and community educators.

The conference will take place in person at Teachers College, Columbia University over two days, with each day having a different theme. There will be keynotes, panels, workshops, and breakout sessions themed on workshops. The conference will feature various speakers, panelists, presenters, performers, and activations - more information to come shortly!

The Black Education Research Center (BERC) at Teachers College, Columbia University focuses on education research at the intersections of Black history, culture, politics, and leadership. We are research faculty, postdoctoral scholars, and graduate students and alumni of Teachers College, Columbia University and other institutions devoted to enriching the education of Black students through transdisciplinary research, cross-sector collaboration, and policy advocacy. BERC led development of the new Black Studies Curriculum for New York City Public Schools as part of the Education Equity Action Plan initiative.
