Agency is a fundamental component of full and equal participation, referring to the power, capacity, and ability to recognize and voice one’s hopes, make decisions about one’s life, and take action in body, speech, and mind. Yet the agency of girls and young women, especially those living in the most marginalized contexts, is often misunderstood, unrecognized, underdeveloped, and/or actively stifled. How can we work with girls to change this and expand opportunities for the fuller exercise of agency?

Please join us to hear from members of the Learning and Action Alliance on Girls’ Agency (LAAGA), a community of practice comprised of 23 leaders in gender equality and education, working in 18 countries across Africa, America, Asia and the Middle East. Together with the Center for Universal Education at The Brookings Institution, LAAGA works to create shared understandings about the development and exercise of girls’ agency within diverse contexts and seeks to put these ideas into action in education practice and policy that support adolescent girls, particularly those living in rural, high-poverty contexts.
