Kick Off to New York Civic Learning Week: A Conversation with Richard Haass

Center for Educational Equity Executive Director Michael Rebell discusses the importance of civic education with Dr. Richard Haass, who is in his 20th year as president of the Council on Foreign Relations. This will be the first in a series of events celebrating New York Civic Learning Week, March 6 - 10, 2023.

 

Democracy Ready NY is a statewide, nonpartisan, multigenerational coalition committed to advancing civic learning and civic preparation. The coalition is convened by the Center for Educational Equity at Teachers College.

Dr. Haass served in the State Department under Presidents George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan, the White House under George H.W. Bush, and the Pentagon during the Carter administration. He was the US envoy to the Cyprus negotiations and the Northern Ireland peace process, and after 9/11 was the US coordinator for the future of Afghanistan. Dr. Haass is the author or editor of fourteen books on American foreign policy and one book on management. His latest book, The Bill of Obligations: The Ten Habits of Good Citizens, was published by Penguin Press in January 2023. A Rhodes Scholar, Dr. Haass holds a bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College, a doctorate of philosophy degree from Oxford University, and numerous honorary degrees. He is the recipient of the State Department’s Distinguished Honor Award, the Presidential Citizens Medal, and the Tipperary International Peace Award. Dr. Haass was born in Brooklyn and lives in New York City.
