The conflict in South Sudan has produced one of Africa's largest refugee crises. Millions have been internally displaced or have fled to neighboring countries, with Uganda hosting the largest share. Many refugees remain in protracted displacement, and prospects for return are uncertain. Uganda has been recognized for integrating refugees into public primary schools under its progressive refugee policy.
This talk presents findings from an ongoing case study of refugee-hosting public primary schools in Uganda where an international non-governmental organization has been implementing an education project. It explores how refugees and host community engage with their children’s schooling. The talk also shares preliminary evidence on the effect of the recent South Sudanese refugee influx on the learning achievements of host-community students.
