Master of Arts in Applied Anthropology
The Master of Arts in Applied Anthropology operates on the principle that anthropological theory and ethnographic methods are vital tools for solving complex human problems and advancing social justice. As the first Ivy League institution to offer both an M.A. and Ph.D. in Applied Anthropology, Teachers College provides a unique home for students inspired to bridge deep social theory with practical, real-world action. Students will leverage TC’s location in New York City, utilizing the city's vast organizational and institutional landscape for applied research and field study opportunities.
The program welcomes recent undergraduates from all academic backgrounds who share a deep passion for the study of human systems and want to turn their intellectual curiosity into practical impact, as well as working professionals looking to develop an advanced skill set in applied qualitative methods. Coursework focuses on anthropological praxis outside of academia, preparing students to conduct ethical, culturally informed research, design qualitative and ethnographic projects, and communicate actionable insights to diverse decision-makers.
The 32-point program is flexible and can be completed either full-time in 1.5 years or part-time across 4 to 5 semesters. The curriculum is structured around foundational core courses designed to equip students with a strong understanding of anthropological theory and research methods alongside 12 points of specialized electives, allowing students to customize their path to align with their intended career goals and aspirations. Students gain direct, hands-on experience through a required, semester-long practicum placement with an external agency, culminating in an integrative project with tangible deliverables that will help address real-world problems. Graduates are uniquely prepared for impactful careers across a wide range of sectors, including international development, urban policy, public health, human rights, environmental sustainability, and business and design anthropology.
