Programs in Anthropology are proud to announce that Mako Miura, Ph.D. Candidate in Anthropology & Education, has been awarded the Weatherhead East Asian Institute Dissertation Fellowship for 2026-2027. This prestigious fellowship is awarded to students at the write-up stage of their dissertation with a research focus on East, Southeast, or Inner Asia. Mako received this award to continue her dissertation writing on Japanese classrooms.
Mako is a sociocultural and linguistic anthropologist in training, studying the interactions among young children in multicultural and multilingual early childhood classrooms in Osaka, Japan. Her dissertation research examines what happens when two- and three-year-old children from Vietnam and Mongolia who draw on a multimodal mix of verbal and extraverbal expressions spend time with one another in Japanese classrooms with peers speaking different languages.
We congratulate Mako on her wonderful achievement!
