Program Description:

This course offers an in-depth exploration of scientific tutoring techniques grounded in cognitive science principles. It is designed to equip participants with advanced strategies in reading comprehension, mathematical reasoning, cognitive feedback, test-taking, and inclusive tutoring. The course is timely and relevant, especially in the NYC context, addressing critical issues such as learning loss and educational diversity. The course uniquely combines neuroscience, psychology, and education, offering a multidisciplinary perspective on tutoring.

Participants will gain practical skills in tutoring, grounded in cognitive science, enhancing their effectiveness as educators. They will learn to apply scientific principles to diagnose learning needs, develop personalized tutoring strategies, and engage various stakeholders in the educational process. Some will be ready to launch their own tutoring practice or get hired at tutoring firms across the world.

Please Note: This course is offered on a non-credit basis or for 1 credit. Registration for this course through TC Academy is for the non-credit offering and Academic Credits will not be awarded. For instructions on how to register for the credit offering see below.

This course can be taken for credit in accordance with TC's enrollment policies.  If you are not a current student and would like to take this course for credit, please review the Non-Degree Application Instructions page on our website and proceed accordingly.  Also, please note that if you plan to take this on a for-credit basis, college tuition and fees will apply.  If you are a continuing student in a degree program and have approval from your advisor, you can register for this course beginning on December 4th.  Winter session courses will follow spring registration and payment deadlines. 

Instructor(s)

Dan Lerman is a world-renowned tutor and educator with extensive experience in developing and applying scientific tutoring techniques. He is considered the world’s top private tutor, with a PhD in Cognitive Science, 17 years experience, and a private tutoring rate of $1250/hour. He has started and sold tutoring companies, trained hundreds of tutors, and taught at several top schools in the world (St. Paul’s, Saint Ann’s, Oxford, Columbia). He currently runs an online community for the top private tutors in the world called The League of Exceptional Tutors.

Learning Objectives

Participants will:

Upon Completion

Participants who successfully complete this course will receive a Certificate of Participation.

Licensed educators in NY state are also eligible for a Continuing Teacher Leader Education (CTLE) certificate for a total of 15 CTLE hours.
