Child Abuse Identification & Reporting

Program Description:
Child Abuse Identification & Reporting Workshop
Protecting children starts with knowing what to look for and what to do. This two-hour, live workshop provides the mandatory training required by New York State for all mandated reporters, delivered by Teachers College, Columbia University, a provider approved by the New York State Education Department.
This workshop reflects the most current state requirements. Recent amendments to Social Services Law § 413 expanded the required curriculum, and TC Academy's workshop meets both the September 1, 2024 and September 1, 2025 updates, including new guidance on identifying abuse in children with intellectual or developmental disabilities. All mandated reporters, including those who have previously completed this training, are required to complete the updated workshop by November 17, 2026.
Topics covered include:
- Definitions and forms of child abuse and maltreatment, including physical, emotional, and sexual abuse and neglect
- Indicators and warning signs of abuse and maltreatment across age groups and settings
- Identifying abuse and maltreatment in children with intellectual or developmental disabilities
- The role of trauma and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in child development and vulnerability
- Recognizing signs of abuse during virtual interactions
- Implicit bias and its impact on identification and decision-making
- The legal obligations of mandated reporters under New York State Social Services Law § 413
- How and when to report suspected abuse or maltreatment to the appropriate authorities
- Protective factors that support child safety and family resilience
